International Miners' Organisation (IMO), an alliance of mining unions created on the initiative of the NUM and the French CGT.
British Government Communications Headquarters.
In 2000, Windsor brought a libel action against the Sunday Express over an article stating categorically that Windsor had worked as an MI5 agent for Rimington and wrongly claiming that this had been confirmed by the MI5 whistleblower David Shayler. Two years later, the paper reached an out of court settlement and published a retraction.
British Coal (formerly National Coal Board, NCB).
Gavin Lightman, QC, was appointed by the NUM executive to head an inquiry into the Mirror and Cook Report allegations. His report, released on 3 July 1990, cleared Scargill and Heathfield of personal corruption but accused Scargill of impropriety, breaches of duty and the misapplication of funds, and recommended that the NUM take legal action. That action was abandoned and the case brought by the government-appointed Certification Officer over the miners' leaders' handling of strike funds (also on the basis of Lightman's report) was dismissed by the magistrate, after only three days in court, in June 1991. But the Lightman Report had also triggered an investigation by the tax authorities. On 14 May 1992, however, the Inland Revenue, after a twenty-month-long investigation, cleared Scargill and Heathfield of all charges of breaches of duty and the misapplication of funds.
General Secretary of the International Miners' Organisation.
Public Services International, a global umbrella organisation for public sector unions.
In June 1991 Neil Kinnock presented the British Press Awards' 'Reporter of the Year' prize to Frank Thorne, Ted Oliver and Terry Pattinson, the Mirror team responsible for the anti-Scargill campaign.
Confederation générale du travail, French trade union.
Scargill's personal assistant and NUM press officer.
Transport and General Workers' Union.
